Studded with galls and marked by a long, zipper-like scar, the last of seven elm trees presided massively over our front yard, sheltering generations of squirrels and at least one small human who warmed herself often against the trunk and felt more rooted for it.
We decided that it lived because it was struck by lightning, living proof that what doesn't kill you makes it stronger. Sadly, it didn't survive its next owners, but it is alive in my memory.
